Thiruvananthapuram: The number of people losing money playing online rummy is increasing in Kerala.

Police have taken this matter seriously after discovering that the suicide of a Thiruvananthapuram youth was caused by the debt accumulated from the online rummy game. Authorities at the high-tech cell said such cases are yet to be reported in the state.

Online rummy gained popularity during the lockdown period. Meanwhile, mobile applications that offer loans have also appeared. Those who started out with small amounts later invested larger amounts, and those who lost their money began to borrow. Most of the people who took money through money lending apps were threatened and blackmailed.

Those who lost the money without their parents’ knowledge did not file a complaint after losing the money. Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kuttichal, Vineeth lost more than Rs. 12 lakh. He was reported missing and later found dead. Bijulal, who was accused of Thiruvananthapuram district financial fraud, had also stated that he lost a lot of money playing rummy online.

There are several applications to play rummy online. The game must be played by agreeing to the company terms and conditions. Normally nobody bothers to even read these agreements. Since this game is meant to be played using your skills, it is not banned online. Although online rummy is banned in Tamil Nadu, the number of people who have committed suicide has already surpassed 20.

Online loan ads are also included in the online rummy gaming apps. The money, which bears 36 percent interest, must be paid on time, otherwise there will be threats. The blackmail messages are sent after revealing various information from the person’s phone.

Experts say that when you play rummy online, it’s usually not people who are playing on the other side. The applications built with artificial intelligence recognize the game pattern of the individual after the first phase and then take over the game in the later phases.

High-tech crime cell DYSP, ES Bijumon, explained that although many people lose money playing rummy online, no one is willing to step forward with a complaint. Gambling addicts can only be discouraged from doing so through counseling. Awareness campaigns, on the other hand, are conducted using police social media accounts.
