  • After remaining stable yesterday, gasoline and diesel prices rose further on Sunday.
  • Automobile fuel now costs over Rs 100 in various cities and the price of gasoline remains the highest in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan.
  • The price of petrol in Delhi is Rs 95.03 per liter while diesel is priced at Rs 85.95 per liter.

After a day’s hiatus, gasoline and diesel prices were again hiked by state-owned petroleum marketing companies (WTOs) today. In Delhi, the price of gasoline increased by 27 paise to 95.03 rupees per liter. While diesel has become more expensive by 29 paise and now amounts to Rs 85.95 per liter in the national capital.

In the financial capital, fuel prices have already been selling at an all-time high since May 29, when the price of gasoline broke the 100 rupee mark. After today’s hike, gasoline prices hit new records in Mumbai retailing at Rs 101.25 per liter while diesel is priced at Rs 93.10 per liter.

Gasoline and diesel prices in major cities

Fuel prices in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are sky high. Last month Bhopal became the first capital where people had to pay more than 100 rupees for a liter of gasoline and a similar trend was followed in Jaipur afterwards. To date, the price of gasoline is Rs 103.17 per liter in Bhopal, while a liter of gasoline costs Rs 101.59 in Jaipur. Fuel prices in the Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan remained the highest in the country with a liter of gasoline costing Rs 105.33 and diesel trading at Rs 98.20 per liter on Saturday.

After the 18-day hiatus in the price review during the Assembly elections, fuel prices were increased 16 times in May. In contrast, five days after the start of June and fuel prices have already seen two significant increases.

State-run CMOs like Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) revise fuel prices every day at 6 a.m., keeping international prices and the foreign stock market as a benchmark.

Gasoline and diesel prices differ from state to state based on value added tax (VAT) and freight charges. Rajasthan, for example, levies the highest VAT in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Both central and state taxes are 60 percent of the retail price of gasoline and 54 percent of diesel.
