AKRON, Ohio, 20 October 2021 / PRNewswire / – To help educate consumers and new pet owners about the costs associated with adding a dog or cat to the home, the ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance program has developed a ” cost of care wheel ”available to veterinary hospitals. The interactive tool can be accessed and ordered free of charge through the ASPCA’s Animal Medicare Online Veterinary Resource Center, which also houses a strong library of content dedicated to veterinary staff and clients.
“The ‘cost of care wheel’ can be used to facilitate the important conversation about finances, often seen as an uncomfortable topic for vets, whose primary goal is to provide the best animal care,” said Gina Fortunato, Assistant Vice President of Veterinary Services, Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group ™, ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance Providers.
The “Cost of Care Wheel” contains information based on actual claims data for accident, illness and preventative care bills submitted over a five-year period for nine popular dog breeds and five cat breeds. The wheel can be turned to display the data for each breed, evaluated in 4 different ways:
- The average cost of care per year for the selected breed
- The average cost of caring for the animal at three stages of its life: in the first year of life, as an adult and as a senior pet
- The average cost of care for the animal with an insurance claim at the same stages of life
- The actual amount spent on health care by half of clients of the same race in each of the three stages of life
“Studies show that owners want to know more about the future costs of caring for their beloved pets. When animal health care teams educate clients about future veterinary costs, they allow the owner to proactively plan for their animal’s health care, ”Fortunato added. “This leads to fewer economic limitations for customers, resulting in more care for pets and the preservation of the family-animal bond. Veterinary teams have less moral stress, which leads to less burnout and better job satisfaction. There is an increase in revenue, both from the increased ability of clients to pay for recommended care, as well as increased business as satisfied clients give more word of mouth referrals. “
In addition to the “Cost of Care Wheel”, the Veterinary Resource Center contains:
- Customer Education Materials — Order brochures, posters and more to help start the conversation about pet insurance with your customers
- Digital Library— Take advantage of our downloadable resources to help you grow your business and discuss the cost of pet health care with your customers
- Continuing Education — Learn new concepts and unique ways of thinking with on-demand continuing education courses designed to benefit your teams, customers, pets, and businesses.
“We believe that if you educate customers, you protect pets. According to a recent survey **, veterinary staff ranked “helping clients pay for unplanned veterinary expenses” and “focusing less on costs and more on treating pets” as the main motivations for recommending a pet from health insurance company to their customers. Our resource center contains safeguards that will help you in this effort, ”added Fortunato.
