Ashton Fowler named new Sylacauga City Council chairman at Tuesday’s meeting


SYLACAUGA, Ala. –At the Sylacauga City Council meeting on Tuesday night, Ashton Fowler was elected as the new president for the next twelve months in a 3-2 split decision.

Lee Perryman will now serve as Pro-Tem Chairman, effective immediately.

Additionally, Mayor Jim Heigl presented a Service Award to Sylacauga Parks and Recreation Board Member Chris Taylor for his 30 years of dedicated service. During her tenure, Taylor worked with five different parks and recreation managers and oversaw the construction of the Maxye Veazey Senior Center.

The Sylacauga City Council declined to consider donating property near the airport.

They authorized repairs to the crane at the city shop by Southeast Crane & Hoist, LLC at an estimated cost of $7,467.50 due to fire damage on September 1, 2022 (insurance claim) .

City Council accepted Mayor Jim Heigl’s recommendation to extend cleaning services with Aaron’s Cleaning Service for an additional 90 days.

They also authorized repair of the municipal shop roof by MJ Brooks & Son Construction, Inc. at a cost of $3,100.

The board appointed Derek Smith to the Zoning Board of Adjustment and Appeals for a three-year term that expires in January 2022.

The Sylacauga City Council has approved travel and training expenses for Fire Lt. Kyle Mosely to attend the AFC Investigator I course at the Opelika Training Center, November 14-18, 2022. No registration fee. Meals and the use of a vehicle provided by the city will be incurred. The total estimated expenses for Moseley are $75.

City Council approved travel and training expenses for Fire Lt. Kyle Moseley and Fire Chief Nate Osgood to attend the AFC Rapid Intervention Crew Member course at Alexander City FD, Nov. 28-Dec. ‘registration. Meals and the use of a vehicle provided by the city will be incurred. The total estimated expenses for Moseley and Osgood are $75 each.

The board approved travel and training costs for firefighter Shelby Byrd to attend the AFC Apparatus Operator: Aerial course at Homewood FD, November 28-December 2, 2022. No registration fee. Meals and the use of a vehicle provided by the city will be incurred. The estimated total expenses for Byrd are $75.

They approved travel and training expenses for Assistant Clerk Krissy King to attend the AOC Municipal CLE Class 2022 for Municipal Judges, Clerks, and Magistrates in Montgomery, November 4, 2022. $50. Additional costs for meals and mileage will be incurred. The estimated total expenses for King are $149.

Additionally, they approved travel and training expenses for Magistrate Melanie Allen to attend the AOC Municipal CLE Class of 2022 for Municipal Judges, Clerks, and Magistrates in Montgomery on December 2, 2022. $50 registration. Additional costs for meals and mileage will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Allen are $149.

The council accepted the donation of a 2017 Ford Starcraft Starlite 15-passenger modified van with a wheelchair station, serial number 1FDEE3FS1HDC74132, from the Eastern Alabama Regional Planning and Development Committee at no cost.

City Council accepted the additional accounts payable invoice received for fiscal year 22 in the amount of $33,136.17 and the additional invoices received for October in the amount of $263,062.84.

Council held a meeting regarding budget requests for FY23 at 4:00 p.m. in Mayor Heigl’s conference room, then followed the regular business session at 5:00 p.m.

The next Sylacauga City Council meeting will be Tuesday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m.
